That slow, dirty, 12/8-feel blues on the bass
Переглядів 313Місяць тому
One of the coolest grooves you could ever play on the bass is a slow, dirty, 12/8 feel blues. Like pretty much any style, the best way to learn this one is to start slow. Then, once you get comfortable with the groove, you can build on it but only to the extent that it helps the song. Watch my demo. It'll give you some ideas on how to play this awesome style on the bass. It really is a blast to...

Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's Back Together Again has a wicked bass by Basil.
👍Thanks, Matt.
The key to Rocco’s sound was his Left Hand Muting. He explains and shows it in his instructional video…available free on UA-cam! Really a great reveal….because the Sound is obvious when you hear it… but not obvious to watch…. He was a great and fun guy. Glad I got to meet him:)
Thanks, Dr. Bass Face!
👍
Thanks, Jakub!
OH you're so cuuuuuuuute!! Now go kick some ass!---Longtime fan.
👍😀
Greatest respect to someone like Ardy who learned to play guitar AND bass left handed just to add to the authenticity of the show. I think Lenie Colacino from the original Beatlemania cast was the only other lefty Paul from what I can tell. Just amazing stuff. And what a great voice. He's the whole package.
👍Thanks, Pete!
Wow - that was one of the best 1:09:28 of my life! This video deserves thousands of views. An extraordinary gentleman that goes above and beyond for his students and academia. You couldn’t ask for more. Well done!
Thanks, CM. Glad you liked the interview. Spread the word!
What a guy , what a musical beast. Jonas and lane are unbelievable talents
Oh yeah. Thanks!
Another great interview Jon! I am one of those over 50 sorehanders! I am a student of Phil’s, and I am compelled to comment that what we saw on this interview is 100% accurate and true. Anyone who studied with Phil will see how lucky they are to have such a rareity….a working musician with such a high level teaching pedigree and communication skills. It just seems right that Phil gets this exposure for all his hard work. Jon, excellent interview highlighting a humble master!
Thanks, John. “Sorehanders,” eh? You taught me a new word! 😂 Glad you liked the interview.
What a great, information packed interview! I am one of those old guys with arthritis you are talking about Jon. I didn't realize that you wrote so many books!
Thanks, Perry. Sorry about the arthritis, but maybe you can take comfort on the fact that you’re not alone. (Maybe? 🤔). Hit me up anytime with your bass-playing questions. I’m always happy to help!
Another great interview!!
Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Long time fan of Phil Mann. And when he posted about an interview with Jon Liebman I was like "why do I know that name"... then I checked my bookshelf. :) Excellent interview Jon. And I'm now a subscriber. And thank you "Dr. Phil". Just reinforces why you are one of my favorite educators.
Thanks so much, Eric. So glad to have you in the FBPO community!
Thanks for instigating such a wonderful conversation, Jon, it was lovely to drop by ‘For Bass Players Only’. My very best, to you and your audience. Philip
Loved having you, Philip. Thanks for a great interview!
A teacher who goes the extra mile for his students and at the same time maintains his musical playing career. A lot to be said. Thanks Jon and Phillip .
Thanks, Lawrence!
I'm a professional fretted and fretless bassist In Nashville Tn. touring/sessions orchestra PIT work etc... I also teach privately in my home studio and at a local private school K - 12th grade. I really love Philip Manns approach to teaching. His style and method of teaching truly resonates with me. I'm also putting out my first bass Instructional book that should be ready by the spring of next year. Great Interview John. I also have one of your bass books, ''Bass Aerobics''. Great book.
Thanks for weighing in, Mario, as well as for your kind words. Congratulations on your new book too. Good luck!
Hey Stu, after you helped destroy CCR, how did your solo career go ? However it was a nice move by John Fogerty for not condescending to play with you at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. You can TAKE THAT AS A FRIEND !!!!
Thanks for weighing in, Stublinsky.
Cool
Cool indeed. Thanks, Rene! 😀
I started at 55 and its been a month. The band im in got 7 songs im loving it . I want a hotter amp for sure.
I own a fender bassman 300
That’s great, William! Welcome to the low end!
👍
For my money, when it's all set and done, Brian Bromberg could very well be the greatest and most accomplished bass player of all time. He has covered virtually every style of music and is incredibly versatile on both acoustic & electric bass. He may not be a household name like Stanley Clarke or Jaco Pastorius but he is definitely up there with them as far as important voices for the bass. One of the true masters of the bass playing and in my bass Mount Rushmore. Excellent in depth interview with one of the all time greats.
Agreed! Great tribute to a great bass player. Thanks!
Brian is one of the few multi-genre virtuosos on the planet concerning the electric and upright basses and is an absolute MASTER of the instrument!!! It was a fantastic interview and great insights into Brian's physical challenges, how he overcame them, and how he learned to play in tune from a virtuoso violinist! Stanley Clarke's action is reported to be very low, too! I love Brian's Every Note Counts philosophy! We're hired to play bass and serve the song, not to play bass solos!!! Technology will not make you a better bass player! You play the bass because you love music and love playing bass!!! So many gems and one of the best music-related interviews I've ever seen!!! I looking forward to his new project with Paul Brown and Michael Paulo and his tribute to Scott LaFaro!!
Right on, Keith! Thanks very much.
It's such a shame that Eddy and Alex were so petty and insecure (and drugged out) for so much of their careers. They had this fabled golden goose that made great music--that I lot of people loved--while at the same time generating hundreds of millions of dollars. But their egos got the best of them and they had to fvck it all up for everyone--including themselves. Idiots.
Thanks, Big Island.
Why can't i find any early footage of the Feelies?
Good question, Beaky Free. Likely it’s pretty rare. You may have to dig a little deeper. Good luck!
Saw Dave M in New Orleans April 79 with Gino Vannelli . Great Bass player .
Cool! He must have made quite an impression on you if you still remember that show all these years later. Thanks for weighing in!
Just a great human being, love him
A good guy for sure. Thanks, Russell!
there was a guy who worked at a guitar shop here in town who would air bass and say "you gotta ride the E" when a rock song was playing
A lot of times yes, a lot of times no. 😁 It all depends. Thanks, Majoras!
Very impressive how she conduct herself for her age is not very common, BRAVO young Lady ! Ellen you really ROCK! may God continue to bless you forever!
Thanks, Miguel!
Clifford and Cook have no shame. John Fogerty rates with Lennon, McCartney, Carol King and Harry Nilsson as the best songwriters of that era. These two clowns got stupid by thinking that they had the same kind of talent as John. The fact is John was in a magical songwriting zone for 3 or 4 years and these guys went for a magic carpet ride and obviously felt entitled. Their greedy egos allowed them to be scavengers with no self respect. Johns music was manipulated away from him, I can't blame him for bad feelings, as musicians, they're a joke
Thanks for weighing in, Todd.
❤❤❤ Hi Yesssss Chris i enjoyed you guys Jarreau and you on stage in Berlin that was just great man?👍👍👍 Greetings from Cameroon Im J.Chris B.👋👋👋

Amazing interview Ellen; "For Bass Players Only " , was so nice to get to know you better 😀 KEEP ON GROOVING GIRL!! , a devoted fan forever, lots of pure admiration from Australia 🇦🇺 cheers 🍻 👏
Glad you enjoyed the interview, Paul. Thanks for weighing in!
It's been my experience that shredding bass players are called "unemployed"
So true! Well, maybe with very, very few exceptions, but overall, your point is spot on! 😂 Thanks.
All hail Paulie Now!
😀👍
You are too kind bass whisperer… you da man.
Excellent interview from JL as always …
Thanks, Grayden! Always great to hear from you!
Appropriate last name.
😀
Wow so glad I found this channel! 60 years old, been playing since I was 14 and enjoy it now as much as ever!
Great to have your here, Greg. Welcome aboard!
A pleasure to watch
Glad you enjoyed it, Anton. Thanks!
My definition of CCR is: a genius + a brilliant rhythm section. The 4 TOGETHER are unbeatable. They were the best Rock and Roll band in history.
👍
I run BlackRoots Academy Of Soul, and I am the Bass Guitarist. This will be helpful 😎
That’s great to hear, thanks. Happy to help!
🤘
👍
Andy's great. I was in a folk rock band with him for 18months or so in the mid 90s. Really lovely bloke, and fabulous company in both rehearsal room and on stage :-)
Awesome! Thanks.
Another great interview Jon!
Thanks!
Looking forward to this. Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it.
I've been blessed to see Byron in concert with the late great George Duke many times!!! His groundbreaking extended solo on the George Duke classic "Reach For It" is probably the longest bass solo in Top 40 history!!!!! His playing with Roy Ayres is amazing!!! What a PHENOMENAL BASSIST!!!!!!!
Those must have been some great experiences, Keith. Thanks for the comment!
I wonder if Nick Beggs met Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen. Those two were the most talented guys around, and were my favorites back in the day. They both have charisma and amazing talent. Does anyone call the Chapman Stick the 'Chapstick'? :)
Interesting question about Nick and Uwe. The “Chapstick” question is a real groaner, though. That’s why I like it! 😂 Thanks for weighing in!
I will not leave Germany for USA not even in a million years
👍
She could have (and probably should have) asked better questions than you did.
What did you have in mind, Juan?
480p? WTF are we back in the 60s?
🤔
Very groovy!!
Thanks, Muslehed! Glad you like it!
Great channel. 👍🏻
Thank you! 👍
Great interview! I’ll see you soon Julia 🎶
Glad you liked the interview, Ronnie. Thanks!
One thing that can honestly be said about John is that he gets into his job! He plays with his whole body, and that's a great tell for the better bass players, and drummers as well.
Yeah, John’s great for sure. Thanks, David!
Jimmy is one of my all-time favorite bassists and one of the coolest and humble dudes on the planet!!! His bass playing with the Yellowjackets was brilliant and it's hard for me to listen to them since Jimmy left! The vibe is not the same to me. Their first album is still among the best debuts I've ever heard! I love what he played on Gino Vannelli's Brother to Brother recording especially on the AMAZING title track!!! I'm not surprised that Jimmy is an in-demand producer because he's an amazing musician and a cool person to hang with. Thank you for another great interview!
Well said, Keith! Jimmy is awesome for sure! Thanks for the comment.
